Men's health at NYMD Center is the part of the practice built around a simple observation: men wait. They wait on symptoms that would send most women to a doctor within the week, and by the time they come in, a problem that was easy to manage has had years to settle in. Dr. David Shusterman, the urologist who founded the group, was featured in the New York Post on the health issues men most often ignore, and that list still describes a large share of the men who walk through our doors: urinary changes, erection problems, low energy, a lump they have been watching, blood in the urine they hoped would go away.
Our men's health program exists to make the first visit easy and the evaluation thorough. It sits inside a multi-specialty group, which matters more than it sounds. A man who comes in for erectile dysfunction is, from our point of view, also a man whose blood vessels are telling us something. A man who comes in for fatigue and low libido needs his hormones measured before anyone hands him a prescription. Because urology, sexual healthcare, internal medicine and cardiology share one building and one record, that kind of connected thinking happens in the same visit rather than across three referrals.
What men's health covers here
The core is urology, led by Dr. Shusterman and Dr. Joseph Motta. That includes the enlarged prostate, where we favor minimally invasive treatment matched to prostate size, including prostate artery embolization performed with our interventional radiology team; kidney stones, treated most often with shock wave lithotripsy in our office-based surgery center; and the waking at night to urinate that so many men accept as a fact of age when it is usually a treatable, and often not even urologic, problem.
Sexual health is the second pillar. We treat erectile dysfunction across the full range of options, from low-intensity shockwave therapy and Trimix injections to penile implants when nothing else works. We treat Peyronie's disease with collagenase injections rather than defaulting to surgery. We offer vasectomy in the office and talk honestly about its risks, and we perform frenuloplasty and circumcision for the specific problems that call for them.
The third pillar is hormones and longevity. Low testosterone is real and treatable, but it is also over-diagnosed and over-treated. Testosterone clinics that start men on replacement without measuring first, and without explaining that treatment suppresses the body's own production and can affect fertility, are in our view a disaster area. We evaluate before we treat, and our men's hormone work is detailed on AndroMD. For men with fertility concerns, the workup starts here too.
Why ED gets a cardiology conversation
Erection quality depends on small arteries, and those arteries are among the first in the body to show the effects of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking. Erectile dysfunction often precedes a heart problem by years. So when a man in his forties or fifties comes in for ED, we treat the ED, and we also screen for heart and stroke risk, with an EKG, lipids, glucose and blood pressure. Dr. Yulya Timashpolsky, our internal medicine physician with a long background in cardiovascular care, sees these patients without a separate trip. Treating the symptom and ignoring the signal would be a missed opportunity.
How a first visit works
Most men are seen the same week at either our Midtown Manhattan or Forest Hills, Queens office. The visit begins with a conversation and a focused exam. Depending on what brings you in, we may do a urine test, a bladder scan, a uroflow study, a scrotal or renal ultrasound, and blood work, all on site. If a cystoscopy is needed, it takes a few minutes in the office with a numbing gel. You leave with a diagnosis or a clear plan for reaching one, not a sample pack.
For men who would rather not sit in a waiting room, many follow-ups and some initial consultations can be done by telehealth. Sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment is available through our virtual UTI and STI clinic. And for men who want a single physician managing all of it with direct access, we offer a concierge urology service.
When not to wait
Blood in the urine, even once and even painless, needs evaluation. A testicular lump or swelling needs to be examined within days. Sudden inability to urinate, fever with urinary symptoms, or an erection lasting more than four hours are emergencies. Everything else on the list of things men ignore, from a weak stream to a curved erection to waking three times a night, is worth a visit sooner rather than later. Problems in this field almost always get harder to fix the longer they are left alone.

Questions patients ask
Do I need a referral to see a men's health specialist at NYMD Center?
No. You can book directly at either office, and most patients are seen within the week. If your insurance plan requires a referral for specialist visits, our front desk will tell you when you call and help you obtain one. Most major insurance plans are accepted.
What happens at a first men's health visit?
A conversation about your symptoms and history, a focused physical exam, and whatever office testing fits the problem: urine testing, bladder scan, flow study, ultrasound or blood work. Almost everything is done on site the same day, so you leave with a diagnosis or a clear plan rather than a list of outside appointments.
Why does a urologist care about my heart?
Erectile dysfunction is often the first sign of narrowing in small arteries, and it can precede heart disease by years. When a man comes in with ED, we treat the ED and also screen for cardiovascular risk with an EKG, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose. Our internal medicine physician sees these patients in the same building.
Will you start me on testosterone at the first visit?
Not without measuring first. We check morning testosterone and related hormones, review symptoms, and discuss what treatment does, including the suppression of your own production and its effect on fertility. Some men need replacement; many do not. Starting therapy without that evaluation is something we will not do.
Can I be seen by telehealth?
Many follow-up visits, medication reviews and some initial consultations work well by video. Testing such as ultrasound, flow studies or cystoscopy requires an in-person visit. STI testing and treatment is available through our virtual clinic, with lab orders sent to a location near you.
