NYMD Center is a multi-specialty medical group with offices in Midtown Manhattan and Forest Hills, Queens. We provide urology and men's health, women's health, internal medicine and cardiology testing, vascular care and interventional radiology, aesthetics, travel medicine, weight management, longevity medicine, a concierge tier and telehealth, under one roof and one medical record. Our story
The practice was founded by David Shusterman, MD, a board-certified urologist. Dr. Shusterman earned his medical degree at Stony Brook and completed residency training in general surgery and then urology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers, finishing in 2007. In 2009 he opened his own practice in Rego Park, Queens, with a small staff and a straightforward idea: patients should be able to see a specialist quickly, understand what is wrong with them, and be treated in the office whenever that is safe.
The practice grew from there. Queens patients brought family members, the office moved into Manhattan, and Dr. Shusterman began adding physicians. Primary care came first, because so many urologic problems turned out to sit alongside blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol that nobody was managing. Gynecology followed, so that women could be seen by a dedicated women's health team in the same office rather than sent elsewhere.
In 2021 the group added interventional radiology to build a prostate artery embolization program, an office-based alternative to prostate surgery for men with an enlarged prostate. The same catheter skills and imaging suite made other embolization procedures possible, and the program expanded to uterine fibroid embolization, varicocele embolization, vein treatment and hemorrhoid embolization. What started as a single urology office had become a group in which a man could have his prostate, his heart risk and his testosterone evaluated in one visit, and a woman could have her fibroids diagnosed by her gynecologist and treated down the hall.
How we practice
Four principles run through every specialty in the group.
Least invasive first. Before we ask how well a treatment works, we ask what it costs the patient in recovery time and risk. A medication that solves the problem is better than a procedure; a procedure done through a pinhole with a day of recovery is better than an operation with weeks of recovery; and an operation done in the office is better than the same operation in a hospital. We move up that ladder only when the simpler option has not worked or is not appropriate for you, and we tell you the trade-offs at each step.
Mechanism first. Patients make better decisions when they understand why something is happening. Our physicians explain the mechanism behind a symptom before they explain the treatment, in plain language, so that the recommendation makes sense rather than having to be taken on faith.
Office-based surgery wherever it is safe. Our Manhattan office includes an accredited office-based surgery center. Procedures that used to require a hospital, from vasectomy and cystoscopy to hysteroscopy and embolization, are done there when it is safe to do so. That means no hospital facility fee, a shorter day and going home the same afternoon. Cases that need deeper sedation are done with a separate anesthesiologist. When a procedure belongs in a hospital, we say so.
One record, one phone number. Every physician in the group works from the same chart, and one call reaches all of them. A referral between our specialties is an internal handoff, not a new intake. Results, imaging and medication lists are visible to every physician involved in your care, at either office.
One group, many specialties
Urology and men's health remain the core of the practice: enlarged prostate, kidney stones, bladder problems, sexual health, testosterone and fertility. Women's health covers annual care through menopause, including fibroids, contraception and office gynecologic procedures. Internal medicine provides primary care and manages chronic conditions, with cardiology testing such as EKG, echocardiogram and stress testing on site. Vascular care and interventional radiology handle veins, arterial disease and the embolization program. The medical spa, travel medicine, weight loss and longevity medicine round out the group, and a concierge tier is available for patients who want direct physician access. Telehealth connects all of it for New York State residents who cannot come in.

Dr. Shusterman continues to lead the group and to see patients. He has published books through UroLongevity Press, which you can find in our library, and he is regularly quoted in national press on urology and men's health; recent coverage is collected on our press page. Behind them is a staff with unusual continuity. Many of the people who answer the phone, draw your blood and manage your scheduling have been with the practice since 2009. That matters more than it sounds: they know the patients, the physicians and the insurance landscape, and they are the reason a call to either office usually ends with an appointment this week.

Questions patients ask
Is NYMD Center a hospital?
No. We are an independent physician group with two offices, in Midtown Manhattan and Forest Hills, Queens. Our Manhattan office includes an accredited office-based surgery center, so many procedures that were once hospital cases are done in the office. When a case genuinely requires a hospital, we arrange it and continue to manage your care.
What does "least-invasive-first" mean in practice?
It means we start with the option that costs you the least in recovery time, risk and disruption, and move to more involved treatment only when the simpler option has not worked or is not appropriate. Before recommending anything, we tell you what it asks of you, not only how well it works, so you can weigh the trade-off yourself.
Do I have to choose one specialty or one doctor?
No. Every physician at NYMD Center works from the same medical record, and one phone number reaches all of them. If your problem crosses specialties, your physicians confer directly and your care is coordinated inside the group. You can also be seen at either office, since the record is shared between them.
