Rego Park, Queens Office

Rego Park is where this practice started. Dr. Shusterman opened his first office here in 2009, and although the group has since grown into Manhattan and Forest Hills, the Queens Boulevard office has stayed open and stayed busy. Today it runs as a gynecology office, Monday to Friday.

What is seen here

This location handles the full range of general and problem-focused gynecology. That means annual examinations and cervical screening, contraception including IUD placement, and the complaints that bring most women in: irregular or heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, recurrent infections, and the long transition through perimenopause and menopause.

Two things we would want a new patient to know. Heavy bleeding is worth raising even if you have been told it is normal — a ferritin level and, where the history fits, a bleeding-disorder screen are the two tests most often skipped, and iron deficiency without anemia produces real symptoms that a standard blood count will not show. And menopause deserves a proper conversation rather than a yes or no on hormones; what the evidence actually supports is considerably more nuanced than the headlines a generation of women were given.

What happens when you need more

Being a single-specialty office does not mean being a single-specialty practice. Everything ordered here is read by the same group and lives in the same chart, so a referral inside NYMD Center is a conversation rather than a fax.

Where a problem needs imaging or a procedure, it is arranged at the office equipped for it. Fibroids are the clearest example: a woman seen here can hear the case for medical management, hysteroscopic treatment, myomectomy and uterine fibroid embolization from the people who perform them, rather than from whichever specialist she happened to reach first. The embolization work is done in the Manhattan office, where our interventional radiology suite is. Pelvic pain that turns out to involve the pelvic floor is referred to pelvic floor rehabilitation; pelvic congestion from venous insufficiency goes to vascular care.
