Dr. David Shusterman built his practice around a straightforward conviction: the least invasive treatment capable of solving a problem is almost always the right one, and patients are entitled to hear about all of their options rather than the subset one specialty happens to perform.
He earned his medical degree at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He began surgical training in 1999 with internship and general surgery years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Chicago Hospitals, completing three years of general surgery rather than the usual two. In 2002 he entered urology residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (Rutgers), a program that trained two residents a year when its case volume needed four. The result was an unusually heavy operative experience and three years as a senior resident; he became chief resident in 2006 and completed training in 2007.
He opened his own practice in 2009. It has since grown into NYMD Center, a multi-specialty group spanning urology, gynecology, primary care and interventional radiology. In 2021 he built out the interventional radiology service to bring prostate artery embolization in-house, which also made fibroid, varicocele, hemorrhoid and vein embolization available across the group.
Alongside clinical practice, Dr. Shusterman teaches urology to physicians in training, serves as a urology expert witness, writes for patients and for industry journals, and is frequently quoted on men's health in national media.
