UTIs

At some point in our lives, we’re all likely to be faced with a UTI (urinary tract infections). These infections are common, and with the use of quick action, treatment can be administered to stop any long-lasting complications from taking place. When you believe you are suffering from an infection in your urinary tract, our team at New York Medicine Doctors will perform a test to determine if you need medical intervention.

When Should You Be Tested For A UTI?

Dealing with a UTI can be difficult and quickly drag down your quality of life. Our team knows this, which is why we want to be able to offer treatment as soon as possible. The faster you come in for a test, the quicker this will be possible. That is why if you find yourself dealing with the below symptoms, schedule an appointment to be tested:

  • Experiencing a burning sensation when urinating.
  • Having bloody or cloudy urine.
  • Pelvic pain in women.
  • Rectal pain in men.
  • Not being able to pass much urine.

What Goes Into UTI testing?

To test for UTIs, our team will need to collect a sample of your urine to test for microbes causing the infection. To ensure the sample is not contaminated with bacteria or yeast from your skin, we’ll need to take what is known as a “clean-catch” sample. This means that the urine collected for the test must be taken from the middle of your urinary stream. Doing so allows us to collect the purest possible sample and better determine if a UTI is present.
