Regenerative medicine makes use of your body’s ability to heal itself and produce healthy new tissue to replace damaged tissue. This type of medicine includes platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy. Regenerative medicine provides a nonsurgical form of treatment for chronic pain relief when conventional treatments don’t work, and you want to avoid surgery.
Platelet rich plasma therapy promotes the natural healing process for musculoskeletal problems that cause ongoing pain. This in-office treatment involves getting injections that contain plasma with a high amount of platelets. Your body’s platelets help repair damage to soft tissue. Plasma that’s rich in platelets maximizes your body’s natural healing process.
Does PRP hurt?
PRP shouldn’t cause you any pain, although you might have some soreness at the injection sites afterward. Dr. Gopal takes a blood sample then places it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red blood cells. You’ll then receive injections of PRP in the targeted areas. The number of injections Dr. Gopal administers depends on different factors, such as the severity of your pain. PRP usually involves getting two to six injections.
Stem cell therapy can repair tissues that are too damaged to repair themselves. They can also stimulate the formation of cartilage, tendons, ligaments, bone and fibrous connective tissue. Stem cells are obtained from either the patient’s own tissue or a purified amniotic source. This concentration of stem cells is then injected into the patient’s damaged tendon or joint. The entire procedure is performed in our office and takes about an hour. Patients are able to go home immediately and many return to work the following day.
At our practice, we have had success in treating an array of injuries with regenerative medicine procedures. Among the most common are:
