Follicular unit extraction is an advanced form of hair-transplant technology. Dr. Shusterman removes every hair follicle separately, which means that no strips of tissue are taken from the scalp. He takes the hair follicles out in a random pattern, which allows the donor area to look essentially the same as it did before the follicles were extracted. FUE is preferred over scalp reduction and flap plastic surgery which involves scars.
FUE technology allows patients to heal quickly, as it requires no stitches. This type of technology causes less pain than follicular unit transplantation. FUE leaves behind only tiny wounds -- a single millimeter or less in diameter. These small wounds will scab over and then heal in three days to a week in most cases.
SmartGraft is a hair-transplant system that takes FUE technology to the next level. The SmartGraft system is suction based. Dr. Shusterman quickly and safely removes the hair follicles from the donor area through tiny punctures and suction. They're then moved into a sterile storage canisters.
Dr. Shusterman then manually places the hair follicles into the thinning or balding area. SmartGraft is handheld, allowing the Dr. Shusterman to exercise a high level of precision during the transplantation process.
People who are in good overall health but suffer from mild to moderate hair thinning or balding on the scalp may be good candidates for hair transplant using FUE technology. Patients who have plenty of donor hair in an area like the back of the scalp are excellent candidates, as this allows for sufficient healthy hair to placed in the balding areas. Every candidate is assessed and treated on an individual basis so that patients will have the best outcome possible.
