While many men and women experience new energy and vivacity as they approach middle age, their eyes and skin reflect just the opposite due to age-related changes. Deep frown lines -- the lines between the eyebrows -- can create an angry, negative affect, while crow’s feet -- fine lines along the outside corner of the eye -- can create the appearance of fatigue. Dr. Liviu Saimovici, an ophthalmologist at New York Medicine Doctors in New York City’s Midtown East neighborhood, provides BOTOX Cosmetic® to smooth moderate to severe frown lines and crow’s feet. Many of his patients complement their LASIK vision-correction surgery with BOTOX to leave looking and feeling better.

Botox Q & A

How does BOTOX Cosmetic work?

Frown lines and crow’s feet are caused by contraction of a muscle in the forehead. BOTOX Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscle, weakening it and smoothing facial lines and wrinkles. Just one treatment is required to achieve results for as long as four months, and they’ll begin appearing just a few days after the treatment and peak around day 10. However, as the treatment wears off, the muscle regains full functionality. At that point, Dr. Saimovici will have to administer further BOTOX treatments to maintain the original results.

BOTOX Cosmetic requires multiple fairly shallow injections in the forehead and/or near the outside corners of the eyes, depending the targeted treatment area. Patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch or sting, but Dr. Saimovici can use topical anesthetics for patients who are concerned about pain.

Who can administer BOTOX Cosmetic?

BOTOX Cosmetic is a prescription drug and must be administered by a physician or their designee, which may be a nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. To achieve a natural result, you must take care to choose a qualified doctor: Someone who’s both trained and experienced in BOTOX Cosmetic administration (such as Dr. Saimovici). They should also be willing to provide before and after photos of patients they’ve treated.

What’s the best timing for getting BOTOX?

Many patients choose to have BOTOX done before a wedding, reunion, or other kind of significant event. Because results peak 10 days after injection and there’s a minor risk of bruising from the injections, BOTOX should be administered three to four weeks before any major event.

Is BOTOX safe soon after LASIK surgery?

BOTOX is generally considered safe, but only a qualified doctor can make a recommendation. Dr. Saimovici will evaluate your individual needs and complete medical history to determine if BOTOX Cosmetic is safe for you.

Can BOTOX be used for wrinkles other than frown lines and crow’s feet?

BOTOX is FDA-approved for the treatment of crow’s feet and frown lines. While many doctors administer BOTOX in other areas and achieve both safety and efficacy, any other use is considered off-label.
